MPhil - Master of Philosophy | TU

The Master of Philosophy, or MPhil, offered by Tribhuvan University (TU) is designed to provide the students with all the essential knowledge in a way that the provided knowledge will raise their examination skills. The program intends to produce academically sound and highly qualified manpower in diverse areas, including administration, management, supervision, educational planning, and curriculum. This degree is based on a semester system and has been divided into three semesters.

The Master of Philosophy program consists of core courses, specialization courses, and dissertations. Participants have the option to specialize in areas such as leadership studies, development studies, and curriculum studies. Students with a Master in Education degree can complete this program within thirty-two credit hours, whereas participants with a master degree in other disciplines should undertake thirty-six credit hours of full-time study.

The MPhil program covers courses such as Basic Statics, Research Methods, Education and Development, Foundations of Education, Advanced Research Methods, Leadership in Education, and Resource Management, among others. In the final semester, participants need to carry out thesis work with the help of an academic advisor. Since the program targets working individuals, classes are held in the evening from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.The Central Department of Management at Tribhuvan University is the only academic institution offering this project in Nepal under TU's affiliation. It is located in Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Province No. 3.

Objectives of MPhil - Master of Philosophy

The major objectives of the Master of Philosophy program are to produce graduates who possess the capability to formulate an important issue and who have the capacity for critical analysis and comprehension of suitable theoretical and methodological frameworks. Some of the specific objectives of the MPhil are listed below:

  • To enhance the critical thinking of students.
  • To prepare students for thoughtful learning and experimentation.

Admission Requirements in MPhil - Master of Philosophy

Entry Requirements for admission:

In order to be eligible to apply for admission to the Master of Philosophy program, the applicant must meet the following criteria provided by Tribhuvan University:

  • Must have a master's degree in any discipline. However, a Master in Education is preferred with a minimum of a second division from the board or university accepted by Tribhuvan University.
  • The applicant must be able to speak and write in English competently and must have knowledge of computer operation.

Admission Procedures:

Admission notices for Master of Philosophy are published by Tribhuvan University in the months of January and July each year. One month prior to the commencement of class. A candidate wishing to pursue the MPhil program must go through a tough process of screening and selection. Candidates need to face an entrance examination followed by an oral interview.

Fee Structure:

Except for some other minor contingencies, the total tuition fee for the MPhil module is Rs. 80, 000. Students have to pay fees in two installments of Rs. 25, 000. However, in the first semester, Rs. 30, 000 will be charged, including Rs. 5, 000 as an admission fee.
