Kathmandu University Department of Biotechnology was established in 2003. It meets the objective of providing educational opportunities to persue higher studies for development of career in bio industries. Enhance professional practices for bio industry through industrial visits and assist bio technical industries and related organizations to assist their problems by providing consulting services HRD interventions.

Principal Message

Welcome to the Biotechnology community at Department of Biotechnology, Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, Kavre, Nepal. We are the pioneer to introduce biotechnology curriculum in Nepal 15 years ago. We are now a group of more than 20 dedicated and professional faculties and staffs who work together with undergraduate, graduate and post graduates to advance our scientific, educational and service goals. Our field of interests are diverse and yet complementary.

We are actively involved in efforts to transform teaching and learning to best promote the production of capable human resources who will find success in advancing scientific solutions to societal problems. In the endeavor we see several alumni of this Department working in National and International institutes all over the world. Some of them even substantiated to be the rising Biotech Entrepreneurs.
 
Our Academic program is rigorous and relevant! Our core subjects of molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, plant tissue culture, animal cell culture, bioprocess and bioinformatics are all integrated with the tools of technology. The education here is not an end in itself; it is the foundation for lifelong wisdom and a time when students can discover their true goals, so their potential can foster.

The various programs at KU Bio Department are as follows:

Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology

The four years course on Kathmandu University pioneering program Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology will help students acquire skills of bio technology which provides studies of living beings at molecular level and their genetic codes during semester wise learning in Kathmandu University academic program.

Master of Technology in Biotechnology

Kathmandu University M. Tech. (Biotechnology) program is of 2 years. A student needs to complete 52 credits of taught course, which includes a dissertation of 9 credits in the final semester. Student's research topic will be assigned by the respective supervisors  and the research can accelerate the biotechnology based industries in Nepal. Some students can also be sent to abroad laboratories to give them more exposure in their area of research work. Identical areas such as Agriculture, Food and medicine will be offered as specialization course.
