Hardware and Networking Course

Overview

A computer system can be divided into two broad categories: hardware and software. The hardware is the physical system— monitor, keyboard, mouse, speaker, printer, webcam, etc. The software is the non-tangible dimension of the computer that makes the computer a usable tool that it is—the operating system, different applications, etc.In a way, the depth to which a person can learn software is unfathomable. One can learn Photoshop and not know SPSS—both of them are software programs. However, the hardware aspect is more of a limited nature. One can understand what all physical components are being used in their computer.

Now, a connection between a computer and another computer or device is called a network. Like, all of your home devices are connected to the Internet via the WiFi router. That is a network. There can be several devices in a network and the largest network in the world today is what we call the internet. While working with computers and related devices, it is important to understand how these things work and communicate between themselves.Say, one fine morning, you sit down at your computer desk and want to start that essay due tomorrow. When you hit the power switch, nothing happens. Or maybe the monitor starts showing a bunch of prompt messages, and you can’t get to your word-processing software to start writing.

Anyone who has worked with a computer for an extended period can tell you that this is a rather common thing to happen. Hence, everyone who uses a computer as such should know how to work with at least their hardware, the software that makes the hardware run, and the network it’s all working on. That is exactly what the Hardware and Networking course is about.

About the Hardware and Networking Course in Nepal

The Hardware and Networking Course in Nepal is all about learning the quintessential foundations of a normal computer system or network.

The Hardware Module

The course starts with an exploration of the hardware aspect of computer systems. Although this is a very practically applicable course, the first few lectures would be dedicated to lectures talking about what hardware and software are, their types, and their use. This part of the course is preliminary. Some students might find the first few lectures unnecessary or redundant, but it helps to bring everyone in on the same page. Then, the practical applications begin.

The first thing that the students will learn as a part of this course is to disassemble and assemble a computer. The students will disconnect all peripherals, and open up the CPU. There, they will disassemble everything that can be disassembled and physically inspect each component before putting everything back together.Following this, they will learn how to set up a brand new computer—using BIOS, installing the operating system (Windows/ Linux OS), installing device drivers, troubleshooting problems etc. Then they will study about the filing systems used in a computer like FAT & NTFS, what they are and why either one is used. Then the student would format a hard disk and make partitions using each of the filing systems.

The students will then learn how to use software tools to best use the available hardware, such as BIOS, CMOS, Command Prompt, etc. All this and more is usually taught in extensive detail for the hardware section of the Hardware and Networking Course in Nepal. The best part is that the students actually perform these actions themselves to learn.

The Networking Module

Compared to the Hardware section, the Networking section of the course is not as extensive. However, that is not to take away from the importance of this module. The previous module is just that extensive.Anyways, the Networking module also starts with a few lectures on what Networks are and how they operate. After that, the students will learn to install Windows Server. They will also be taught what Internet Protocols are and will be taught to use the hardware related to networking, like switches, hubs, etc., and use them to create a Local Area Network.

Even today, the fastest way to access a network is through a physical connection—a wire. So, the students will be taught about the Twisted Pair Cable and how to clamp them to make a physical connection between devices. Then, the students will learn to access the network and work with connected devices like other computers, printers, etc. The will also learn how to install active directory, create domains, create users and define access privileges to said users.

Where to Study Hardware and Networking Course in Nepal?

Since this is a course where the students are expected to physically interact and experiment with computer hardware and networks, this course is best done under the watchful eye of an expert. Needless to say, disassembling an electronic appliance, even one that is a lot simpler than a computer, can be very dangerous. So, it is recommended that you take a physical class at an institution if you wish to take this course.

There are Hardware and Networking courses available on the internet as well. There are many YouTube videos that outline individual lessons learnt in this course. Other learning platforms offer full-fledged courses with certification. However, the aforementioned risk of working with electronic appliances remains. Also, without an expert to guide one through every step and fix mistakes you make, they might damage the computer system beyond repair.

Because a Hardware and Networking Course is so open-ended, the amount of time one needs to segregate to study it is somewhat variable. Still, on average the course takes about a month and a half to two months to complete.
