After appearing in the 10th standard exam, notoriously known as SLC (School Leaving Certificate), Iron Gate, students probably have about 3 months of time. Some uses this spare time to learn something new while other use this time preparing for college entrance exams. However after the result, the first question that comes to anyone’s mind is, “What should I study?” a common question and yet very difficult to answer.
Lots of students find themselves lost while deciding the subject they want to study. The decision must be taken wisely as the subject they chose determines their further course of study and ultimately their professional career. After the results, instead of thinking carefully, many would choose the subject their friends did, other would listen to their parents/ relatives and mostly would choose the subject based upon their marks/percentage.
This practice is so wrong as the marks obtain in the SLC exams barely defines their field of interest. Due to which they struggle all year long to cop up with the subject having no or less fondness to it. Most of the time, this happens because, students have no prior information about the subjects offered by different faculties/ streams in different colleges. Different faculties/ streams offer different subject matter. Music and physics won’t fall under the same branch. So one must be specific regarding their interest and should seek for and choose the particular stream.
Basically HSEB (Higher Secondary Education Board) has offered a wide range of subject under mainly 3 faculties/ streams; Science, Management/commerce and Humanities. Each faculty further provides multiple ranges of subjects. There are thousands of colleges running +2 under the guidelines of HSEB across the nation.
The subjects offered by these three streams are mentions below.
*Note: Compulsory English and Compulsory Nepali subjects are mandatory to read in all the streams in the +2 program.
If you like experimenting, proving something practically or simply if you wish to work in a medical field, be an engineer, doctor, nurse etc. then this faculty is for you as it will teach you the fundamentals you require for university level study.
*Note: After successful completion of +2 in sciences, students can directly apply for any university for further study.
Banking, Marketing, Business, and Economy has been something of your interest, then, this is right faculty for you.
*Note: After successfully completing +2 in commerce, students can enroll in university level education like BBS, BBA, and BIT (if computer science was optional).
Compared to other stream, this stream provides the widest range of subjects to the students. If you wish to work in social field, be a social worker, journalist may be. Or simply want to do some social deed with professional skill then this is what you should opt.
*Note: Similar to the +2, even in bachelors/ University program, this faculty provides widest array of subjects to specialize in. One can apply for specialize subject in the university based upon their preferred subject in the +2.
Apart from these three mainstream faculties, HSEB also run Education program under it wings. Students having keen in teaching field may acquire it. The subjects vary according to your subject of interest.
But this not it that Nepali education has to offer to SLC graduates. If you wish to pursue something which is internationally accepted then, A Level program affiliated to Cambridge University of United Kingdom is here to help. There are various colleges in and outside the valley that provides A Level program to students.
The Subject offered by this program is distinct and depends entirely upon the interest of the students. One can choose a subject form social science and pair it up with Physics maybe. Students can choose subjects from science and non science and prepare accordingly. This internationally accepted program is loaded with other distinct subjects in its place of origin. However, even in Nepal too this program has quite broad subjects to go with.
