Bachelor (BA) in Buddhist Studies | KU

Bachelor (BA) in Buddhist Studies offered by Kathmandu University (KU) is a four year program. Kathmandu University is a Center for Buddhist studies. This program of Kathmandu University (KU) is taught in Rangjung Yeshe Institute (RYI). RYI has worked in close partnership with Kathmandu University (KU) to manage the KU Centre for Buddhist Studies since 2001. The Bachelor program for Buddhist studies is mainly divided into two portions. They are

  1. Core knowledge Buddhism
  2. Language Study

In this undergraduate program, students get to study courses associated with values and beliefs of Buddhism as well as languages like Sanskrit, Nepali, Tibetan, etc. However, they can choose philosophy over language. This bachelor level program helps them to understand the deeper knowledge of the India-Tibet Buddhist practices and its development from the history as well as the Tibetan approach to Buddhist philosophical study. They will also be familiar with Tibetan Language, Nepali language, and with their Script as well. They will be able to read classical Tibetan and Sanskrit, and the graduates will also be able to follow teachings profession.

Objectives of Bachelor (BA) in Buddhist Studies

The major objectives of Bachelor (BA) in Buddhist Studies course offered by KU are as follows:

  • To familiarize with philosophy of Buddhism and to foster qualities of wisdom and compassion through study of it.
  • To produce efficient graduates who can deliver modern and traditional Buddhist philosophy through teaching, translation, publication, research, and practice
  • To realize the importance of divinity and spiritual practice and pursuit in the day to day life and changing the world through it
  • To preserve and protect the Buddha’s principle and use his glorious teachings for the benefit of humanity and living beings at large

Admission Requirements in Bachelor (BA) in Buddhist Studies

The eligibility for Bachelor (BA) in Buddhist Studies program offered by KU are as follows:

  • Candidates must have to complete Higher Secondary School i.e. 10+2 from any stream are eligible to apply for the program
  • The applicants, who don’t have English as their native language and the applicants who don’t have BA degree from an English-medium university, must have to give TOEFL examination have to obtain minimum score of at least 55

Or

  • Candidates have to secure minimum score of 80 on the IBT, or have to get IELTS score of at least 6.0 and no score lower than 5.0 on any one band.
  • English Language Proficiency Exam (ELPE) is necessary for any candidate living in Nepal and not having satisfactory TOEFL or IELTS result and also not having 10+2 diploma or bachelor's degree from an English-speaking country
  • If the score is satisfactory, the applicant will be admitted to this bachelor level program
  • If the score is average, the applicant should pass Academic English and Advanced Study Methods Course
