Kathmandu University's Department of Mathematics proudly launched the Bachelor of Data Science (BDSc) program in 2024 to meet the growing demand for skilled data professionals in Nepal and beyond. In today’s Digital Age, the exponential growth of data generation demands experts who can securely manage, analyze, and apply data for strategic decision-making. This interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree integrates core subjects such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Business Intelligence, preparing graduates to excel in data science roles across industries.

Objectives of the BDSc Program

Kathmandu University’s BDSc program aims to develop proficient data scientists with a strong foundation in multiple disciplines. Key objectives include:

Program Structure and Curriculum

The Bachelor of Data Science is a four-year, eight-semester academic programme of 120 credit hours. Students enrolled in this interdisciplinary programme are offered fundamental courses in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Business. Upon the completion of theoretical courses, along with laboratory activities, Internship, and project work, graduates in this programme are qualified enough to manage and handle data securely for later use. Except for a six-credit-hour internship, all other courses are of three credit hours.

Except for a six-credit internship, all courses carry three credit hours each.

Admission requirement

Prospective students must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

  • Academic Qualification: Completion of grades XI and XII (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) or Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science (PMCs), and a minimum aggregate GPA of 2.0 or 50%
  • Entrance Exam: Appear for the Kathmandu University Common Admission Test - Computer Based Test (KUCAT-CBT), featuring 120 MCQs (covering PCM/PMCs subjects), duration 2 hours. Minimum pass marks: 528 points out of 2220.
