Overview

Kathmandu University Department of Arts and Design School of Arts offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts program. There are majors in two areas of study to choose from in this program: graphic communication and studio art. This program provides knowledge and skills to prepare for a career as a visual artist. The learnings combine intensive class tutorials, ongoing studio work, research, assignments, writing, and self-directed learning or guided projects. This program will give lessons to create original works of art and design and understand Nepalese art and other civilizations.
 
The graphic communication majors give clarity of concepts, strategies, and responsibilities for a powerful design sense. It provides knowledge of the production and development of various print designs, and it also gives room for carrying out independent projects, group shows, and internships at professional art and design organizations. The studio art provides knowledge of illustration, photography, traditional art practice, and elective courses to become an artist, designer, or animator.

Objectives

The main objectives of the Bachelor of Fine Arts or BFA course are as follows:

  • To develop practical skills among students.
  • To provide an understanding of Nepalese art and other civilizations to students.
  • To impart knowledge of the history, theory, and practice of visual and media arts.
  • To prepare students to create art with originality and depth.
  • To enable students to apply their knowledge in the production and analysis of media arts.

Admission Requirements

Eligibility Criteria:

The eligility criteria for Bachelor of Fine Arts program are as follows:

  1. All candidates who have completed their grade 12 in any stream from a college/university/board recognized by Tribhuvan University are eligible for admission.
  2. While there is usually no other criteria, some universities/colleges may require candidates to secure a minimum percentage (usually 50 – 60%) in Class 12th to be eligible for admission to the BFA course.
  3. In addition to these criteria, preference may sometimes be given to candidates who have studied Arts/Humanities in Class 12th and have a basic knowledge of the Fine Arts subject they wish to pursue.

The average fee for a program in Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) typically ranges from NPR 300,000 – NPR 500,000, though the exact cost may vary depending on the colleges.
