Overview

The Bachelor of Arts program being offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Tribhuvan University has to be one of the most versatile programs being offered in Nepal. The sheer number of specializations available to students within this program is amazing. In the list of available specializations, Bachelors of Arts in Psychology is one of the more interesting programs.
Although not the most popular BA specialization course out there, BA Psychology is a program that results in graduates with many opportunities in the job market in Nepal and abroad.
 

Program Structure

The BA Psychology program at TU is a 4 year program and is yet to offer a semester-wise curriculum as most of the updated programs offered by the same university. The course is colloquially referred to as a 2000 marks program instead of using the more contemporary credit hour metric. Still, the course is a 120 credit hour course. The breakdown of the point schematic of the program is as follows:

Each year, the student is expected to study at least 2 core courses in Psychology, 2 core courses in another discipline and one compulsory or elective course every year. The subjects individually are usually worth a hundred marks. So, five courses a year times the four years of the program gives the students a total of 2000 possible marks for the whole program.

Objectives of BA Psychology

The objectives of studying Bachelor of Psychology Tribhuvan University are:
  • To enter into scientific study of human behavior and specialized fields of knowledge in areas of social, child, clinical, adolescence, counseling psychological areas.
  • To gain skills from training and practical research in areas of counseling, psycho social and psychotherapy.

Specializations

The BA Psychology is in itself a specialization program, at least in theory. Out of the many possible specializations in the BA paradigm, BA in Psychology is one. However, as the course is designed now, there is no provision for exclusively studying Psychology throughout the 4 years of the program. It is usually paired with 2 core subjects from one of the following possible specializations:

Technically, students who wish to get a BA in Psychology will also have a second major in one of the aforementioned disciplines. If the choice of major compliments their academic pursuit in Psychology, it could be considered a kind of specialization. Sadly, not all colleges affiliated with Tribhuvan University offer the entire gamut of specialization courses offered by the university. They are mostly only offered at full in constituent colleges under the TU banner.

Most of the colleges affiliated with TU offer a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with pre-paired core courses to complement the Psychology major. For instance, a college might pair BA Psychology core courses with core courses from BA Sociology.
 

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements for BA Psychology, or any BA program at Tu for that matter, is quite lax compared to most programs at the same university. There is no entrance exam as such and students who wish to enroll in this program can almost walk into a college offering the program and get enrolled, granted they need to have met one academic criteria:

  • The candidate must have successfully completed the +2 or an equivalent degree from Tribhuvan University (TU) or a board/institution/university recognized by TU, regardless of the chosen stream.

The Bachelors in Arts in Psychology at Tribhuvan University could produce individuals that are very much needed, given the state of the society we live in today.
