Bachelor of Arts in Sociology | TU

Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology program offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Tribhuvan is one of the more popular variants of the BA program offerings. The 4 year program is designed to impart an understanding of sociology and anthropology. The teaching method is set up such that the students focus on analyzing and building a comprehensive understanding of the social & cultural institutions as well as the prevailing structures of the same. This is done by inducting a theoretical basis of study for each dimension of this multifaceted discipline as well as initiating the students on the research procedures that can be applied to get a more hands on idea of the same.

Program Structure

As previously mentioned, the BA Sociology program being offered via TU affiliated colleges is a 4 year degree. At the end of each academic year, students appear for a board exam for the five subjects studied in that academic year. Each subject is marked out of a total of 100 marks, totaling the year at 500 marks, and the course at 2000 marks. The overall course is worth 120 credit hours and students actually have to choose two other core subjects every year to complement the two sociology courses studied in the same time frame. The program structure is as depicted below:

The subjects within the BA Sociology paradigm are as follows:

First Year

  • Introduction to Sociology
  • Dynamics of Nepali Society

Second Year

  • Sociological Theories
  • Research Methods in Sociology

Third Year

  • Social Diversity and Inequality
  • Federalism, Governance and Local Level Planning

Fourth Year

  • Sociology of Development and Democracy
  • Academic Research and Writing

Specializations

The thing is, BA Sociology is a specialization of the BA program in itself. That being said, it’s not to say that students do not have the opportunity to explore within the program. It just so happens that the sociology major subjects do not constitute enough credit hours to compete a bachelors program. Hence, students have to choose two more core subjects from any of the following disciplines:

  • BA in Anthropology
  • BA in Film Studies
  • BA in Geography
  • BA in Hindi
  • BA in History
  • BA in Linguistics
  • BA in Nepali History, Culture and Archeology
  • BA in Nepali Bhasa
  • BA in Nepali
  • BA in Population studies
  • BA in Psychology
  • BA in Rural Development
  • BA in Social Work
  • BA in Sociology
  • BA in Economics
  • BA in Buddhist Studies
  • BA in English
  • BA in Home Science
  • BA in Journalism and Mass Communication
  • BA in Music
  • BA in Political Science
  • BA in Sanskrit
  • BA in Strategic Studies

It would be wise for the student to choose a secondary major that would naturally complement their academic pursuits in Sociology, for instance Anthropology, Social Work, or Political Science. While taking up a second major is not exactly a specialization, with the right course selection strategy, it can give the student similar benefits.

Unfortunately, not all TU affiliated colleges offer learning opportunities in all of the programs from the list above. So, a student’s choice of secondary majors might be limited. Hence, the student must be diligent in their research and only enroll themselves in colleges that have the secondary major of their choosing.
