MA Psychology | TU

MA Psychology, also known as Master of Arts in Psychology, is a two-year, four-semester program offered by Tribhuvan University(TU). It consists of 60 credit hours. The importance of psychology is felt in every aspect of life, making it a reputable and essential field in human life. Although it is a relatively young field in the scientific domain, it has been divided into more than 100 sub-disciplines. The application of psychology is extensive and relevant in nursing, medicine, management, engineering, and other fields. Psychology falls under the faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, which examines various aspects of human behavior and the human psyche through a scientific lens.

The need and relevance of studying psychology is increasing every day due to the growing issues of anxiety, stress, relationship problems, financial difficulties, and crime. The Central Department of Psychology at Tribhuvan University offers a semester-based program, while other institutions may offer a yearly program.

Objectives of MA Psychology

The main objectives of MA Psychology (TU) are as follows:

  • The course aims to develop successful psychologists with extensive knowledge, skills, and techniques in the use of psychological tools.
  • To produce professional psychologists who play a crucial role in organizations involved in human counseling and other essential institutions dedicated to helping people.
  • Graduates will be able to make significant contributions in addressing individual, group, societal, and national issues.

Admission Requirements in MA Psychology

Eligibility for Admission:

To be eligible for admission to the MA Psychology program under Tribhuvan University, applicants must hold one of the following bachelor's degrees:

  • Humanities and Social Sciences:
  • BA with a major in psychology
  • Postgraduate diploma in counseling psychology (PGDCP)
  • Bachelors in Film Studies (BFS)
  • BSW

Science:

  • BSc or equivalent

Management:

  • BBA
  • BBA-BI
  • BBA-TT
  • Bachelors in Conflict, Peace, and Development (BCPD)
  • BIM
  • BBIS
  • BHM
  • Bachelors in Health Care Management (BHCM)

Note:

  • Applicants must have completed at least 3 credit hours or 100 marks of coursework in General Psychology (core psychology).
  • They must have obtained a minimum of second division in their Bachelor’s degree from Tribhuvan University or universities recognized by Tribhuvan University.
  • Admission Procedures:

Entrance Examination:

  • Applicants must appear in a written examination lasting one hour.
  • The entrance examination will consist of 100 marks, with 50 marks each assigned to objective questions and students' previous academic records (+2 and Bachelor's).
  • Students will be selected for admission based on merit.
  • 50% of the total seats will be reserved for students with a major in psychology, and the remaining seats will be open to students from other faculties.

Psychologists are needed in a wide range of settings, from large industries to hospitals, nursing homes to care facilities. Psychology is further divided into Research and Applied Psychology. Research psychology encompasses areas such as Abnormal psychology, Cognitive psychology, Personality psychology, Social psychology, and more. Applied psychology includes areas such as Clinical psychology, Counseling, Educational psychology, Human issues, Industrial or managerial psychology, and others. These different areas provide opportunities for MA Psychology graduates to work and earn a living.
