BSc Geology | TU

The Bachelor of Science in Geology (BSc Geology) is an undergraduate program offered by Tribhuvan University (TU), managed by the Institute of Science and Technology (IoST). It is a four-year annual degree program that includes theory, laboratory practicals, fieldwork, and thesis writing. The duration of the BSc in Geology program was changed from three years to four years in 2069 BS (2012 AD) to provide students with an international standard of education at a reasonable price in Nepal.

The Bachelor of Science in Geology program focuses on the study of the physical and chemical nature, structure, and geological processes of the Earth. It provides a comprehensive understanding of earth surface processes, earth materials, tectonics, rock-forming processes, and paleontology. The program covers various areas of specialization, including petroleum geology, volcanology, structural geology, hydrology, sedimentary geology, and climate change. It is a rigorous program designed for students who have a keen interest and passion for studying the Earth, its formation, natural resources, and environmental hazards.

Objectives of BSc Geology

The objectives of BSc Geology program are asfollows:

  • Prepare students to pursue higher studies at the master's level in Geology or other related fields.
  • Empower, encourage, and develop skilled, intellectual, and passionate geologists to work as researchers in geological laboratories, companies, and industries, focusing on the study of the Earth, evolution, landforms, and related subjects.
  • Equip graduates with the techniques and knowledge to apply them effectively within the field of geology, enabling them to solve applied research or geological problems.
  • Prepare students to enter the workforce as geoscientists, geochemists, meteorologists, and other related professions, providing them with the necessary skills and professional readiness.
  • Provide students with the skills and abilities to recognize, formulate, and interpret scientific methodologies and critical thinking skills in the field of geology or related areas.
  • Develop excellent research and communication skills among students, enabling them to work and conduct research in the petroleum and oil sectors, contributing to the economic growth of the nation.
  • Prepare skilled human resources to work as hydrologists, contributing to the development of the hydropower sector, as well as sedimentologists for soil checking during the construction of buildings.
