BIT Entrance Examination - Everything you need to know

The Bachelor of Information Technology, commonly known as BIT, is an academic program offered by various universities in Nepal. This program was introduced to develop skilled individuals with broad knowledge across several IT sub-disciplines and a deep understanding of specialization, enabling them to lead and actively participate in IT team projects. This undergraduate program primarily focuses on computers and their technical aspects, including hardware and software. The Bachelor of Information Technology is designed for individuals who are tech-savvy and interested in computer hardware and software.

This academic offering is designed to develop individuals who possess both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to address current workplace issues. Depending on the chosen specialization, the BIT program caters to a variety of careers.

Software Development: software programmer, software developer, software analyst, software designer. Computer Networks: network engineer, network administrator, network support specialist. Information Systems: junior project manager, IT manager, business analyst.

Universities offering BIT in Nepal

1. Tribhuvan University: BIT at TU is a 120-credit hour academic offering spanning 8 semesters in four years. It is offered by Institute of Science and Technology, and candidates should at least satisfy the condition mentioned below:

  • +2/ PCL candidates from any stream should have at least scored a GPA of 1.6 and a final CGPA of at least 1.8, with 100 marks in English and 100 marks Math or Computer, and secured at least a C grade.

Or

  • Candidate should have scored at least 2nd division at PCL or its equivalent with English and Math/ Computer of 100 marks each.

Or

  • A-level candidates should at least score a D-grade with English and Mathematics or Computer subject of 100/100 marks each

Or

  • Completed a three-year Diploma in second division from CTEVT by studying English and Mathematics or Computer with 100/100 marks each.
     

Entrance Exam format and charge:

  • Total questions: 100 (MCQ-based)

  • Group A: 50 questions (English) from grade 11-12.

  • Group B: 50 questions (Math/Computer) from grade 11-12.

  • Full marks:100

  • Pass marks: 35

  • Exam charge: Rs 1,850/-

Grading Scheme:

The students are graded according as

  • Distinction: 80 % and above ( 8 semesters’ average)

  • First Division: 70 % and above ( 8 semesters’ average)

  • Second Division: 55 % and above ( 8 semesters’ average)

  • Pass Division: 40 % and above ( 8 semesters’ average)

Attendance requirements:

At least 80% attendance in theory and practical classes.

Board examination: Marks weightage as listed below:

  • For theory subjects only: 60% external evaluation + 40% internal evaluations.

  • For theory and practical: 60% external evaluation + 20% practical including project works + 20% internal evaluations.

Estimated cost: 4 lakhs to 12 lakhs on average.

Imp. note: If the applicants have secured equal marks in the Entrance Examination, the placement list will be prepared by considering the marks obtained in Mathematics or Computer subjects. If applicants have equal marks in these subjects as well, the marks obtained in English will be used to prepare the placement list.
 

2. Kathmandu University: The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) at KU is a collaborative undergraduate program run by Kathmandu University (KU), Nepal, covering the first two years of study, and Crown Institute of Higher Education (CIHE), Australia, overseeing the remaining two years of study with a total of 120 credit hours. Candidates seeking BIT from KU should satisfy the terms given below:

  • Nepalese and international applicants who have completed +2 Science (Physics, Chemistry/Computer Science, and Mathematics) with a minimum of 50% marks or a CGPA of 2.0 or equivalent are eligible.

  • Students with a robust academic record, proficient English skills, and who meet financial requirements for an Australian student visa will have a better chance of securing an Australian student visa. Entrance Exam format and charge:

Candidates seeking admission to the BIT program at KU must take the Kathmandu University Common Admission Test (KUCAT), which is administered by the School of Engineering, Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The format of KUCAT is given below:

  • Total questions: 120 (MCQ-based)

  • Structure: PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) or PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), each with 40 questions.

  • Duration: 2 hours.

  • Format and location: Computer-Based Test (CBT) at KU Main Campus, Dhulikhel.

  • CBT scores range: From 0 to 2220 (0 being attempting all questions and answering them all incorrectly, and 2220 attempting all questions and answering them all correctly)

  • Difficulty level: 1 to 5 (1 being the easiest and 5 being the toughest).

  • Pass Mark: 528.

  • Marking Scheme: None Negative.

  • Exam Charge: As prescribed by the School of Engineering.

Grading and Evaluation:

The student is evaluated based on class participation, assignments, practical and project works, term papers, end-semester examination and defense of dissertation. At the end of each semester, students are awarded letter grades as per the following grading system.

Students must score a GPA of 2.0 throughout, and no student can graduate with an "F" grade in any course for graduation.

Important highlights:

  • Students will be registered at both partner institutions, the KU and Crown Institute of Higher Education (CIHE).

  • Modality of Program: Two years at KU and the remaining two years at the Crown Institute. If the visa is denied by Australian immigration, four years of study will be conducted in Kathmandu University School of Engineering (KUSOE), Nepal.

  • At the end of each semester, a credit will be transferred from both institutions.

  • A special convocation will be held in Nepal with designated representatives from CIHE.

Estimated cost:

  • Nepali Students: NPR 8.5 lakhs.

  • SAARC Country Students: NPR 12.75 lakh (1.5 times the regular fee).

  • Other Country Students: NPR 17 lakh (2 times the regular fee).

Scholarships:

  • KU Scholarship: 100% scholarship to the topper, 50% to the second topper and 25% to the third topper of each semester in the next semester’s tuition fees for the study period at KU.

  • CIHE Scholarship: Scholarship Deans Award scholarship (10% reduction in tuition fee for Distinction average and 15% reduction in tuition fee for High distinction average).

And

  • Special scholarship for students enrolled under the KU-CIHE partnership program 50% tuition fee waiver to the student topping the batch during their studies at KU with a CGPA for 3 semesters.
     

3. Purbanchal University: The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) is an eight-semester, 140-credit hour program that spans four academic years. The program, administered by the Faculty of Science and Technology, aims to impart knowledge and cultivate the expertise necessary for a long-term career in IT, rather than merely providing the basic skills needed for the first job. Any individual seeking enrollment in BIT at PU should have the following qualifications:

  • Should have completed twelve years of schooling in any stream with at least a 100 marks mathematics in +2 level or equivalent.

  • Must have a minimum C grade in each subject of grade 11 and 12 with at least a CGPA 2.0 In case a student has taken the optional mathematics subject in grade 12, the student must have passed in the optional mathematics paper with at least D+ grade.

Or

  • Must have secured a minimum score of second division (45%) marks in +2, PCL or its equivalent in any discipline.

 

Format of Entrance Examination and expense:

The faculty of Science and Technology offer BIT and the candidate are required to succeed in the entrance examination the format of which is given below:

  • No. of questions: 100 (MCQ-based)

  • Full marks: 100

  • Pass marks: 35

  • Duration: 2 hours

  • Exam charge: Rs 1,500/- (Rs. 3,000 late charge)

Evaluation and Grading:

  • Students must have at least 80% attendance lectures, tests, and tutorial classes to qualify for the final examination of any subject.

  • The evaluation scheme for any student is given below:

  • For theory subjects only: 80% Final Examination Marks + 20% Internal Marks.

  • For subjects with theory and practical: 20% Internal Marks + 20%, practical Marks + 60% Final Examination Marks.

Betterment Examination for Improving CGPA:

  • A student who has not obtained the minimum CGPA by the completion of all semester exams shall be allowed to take a betterment examination to improve their lowest grade, i.e., 'C' Grade, to meet the minimum CGPA.

  • The student will be allowed to sit for the betterment exam after completing all semester exams, according to the betterment examination application submitted by the student and the approval from the Office of Examination Management.

BIT at PU const about 3-5 lakhs.

Scholarship scheme:

The scholarship in this program shall be awarded on the following basis:

  • Five percent scholarship based on merit of entrance examination conducted by the University.

  • Five percent scholarship based on reservation quota specified by the University.

  • Scanned copies of all the necessary original documents mentioned in the Scholarship Regulations 2078 must be attached and uploaded in JPEG/JPG/PNG Format.
