Exquisite, lip-smacking food, friendly ambiance, and fast service, what else a foodie would want? Well, there is good news for the entire food lover of Kathmandu as one more food joint has been added to the list. ‘Pink Tiffany’, opened by Miss Pink Nepal 2010 winner Meghna Lama in partnership with her friends is located in Jhochhen, Basantapur.
The first restaurant established by the LGBTI member came into existence after Ms. Lama felt the need of doing something for her motherland. ‘I chose to start this business to motivate the youths who are leaving the country in the search of better opportunity and to encourage LGBTI community. I wanted to build a place where transgender could comfortably hang out because people look at them in a different way as stigma and discrimination are still prevailing in our society.”
However starting any venture is not easy in itself and it’s quite obvious that those people who are not yet accepted socially will face more hurdles.
“Being a transgender is not easy. My idea of opening a restaurant was opposed by many. House owner was not ready to give their space in rent to a transgender. It was really difficult to convince our house owner. However, eventually, my heterosexual friend managed to convince him and we found a place to start our venture” says Ms. Lama.
A restaurant is a place where people come to enjoy food but transgender people were devoid of happiness and fun they could have with their dear ones. Pink Tiffany appeared to be the place of food and fun, especially for the transgender people. It serves mouth watering dishes and fun ambiance to enjoy the food that ranges from traditional foods to international dishes.
To embark on any business, support is must and Ms. Lama finds herself fortunate to have such a supportive family.
Model by profession, she has represented Nepal in the international platform. She is a member of US embassy youth advisory council member and youth voice count Bangkok.
“Much of my success as an entrepreneur can be attributed to my modeling career as it has helped me a lot. A number of celebrities were present at the time of opening and they visit our restaurant continuously”.
She believes that good food, dedicated staff, and a proper service helps a restaurant to succeed. With a noble thought of empowering the marginalized group by providing them with job opportunities, she is planning to open a branch of Pink Tiffany soon.
