Bachelor of Dental Surgery or simply BDS is the medical science branch that mainly focuses on teeth development and arrangement. BDS course is mainly related to research, diagnosis, prevention, management, illness treatment, disorders, and mouth condition.

BDS Course in Nepal

First-generation dentists in Nepal used to receive their training in India either at their own expense or through government selection. It was a struggle for different medical colleges or institutions to establish the BDS course.

Finally, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) established the College of Dental Surgery and started providing this course in August 1999. As of now, 14 different colleges are providing the program.

General Information

Bachelor of Dental Surgery or BDS program is a 5-year 6-month undergraduate program in the field of medicine. It consists of 4 and a half years of full-time study and a year of compulsory rotating internships.

There are a total of 14 colleges in Nepal that provides BDS course. 7 of those colleges are affiliated to Tribhuvan University, 6 to Kathmandu University and one is of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.

Objectives of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)

The key objective of the BDS program is to create qualified dental professionals who can easily provide oral health care to the general public.

Eligibility Criteria of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)

To be eligible to study the BDS course in any of the institutions of Nepal, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Should have completed twelve years of schooling.
  • Should have secured a minimum of 50% aggregate in 10+2 or any equivalent course in the science stream (Biology). In CGPA, you should at least secure 2.4
  • Should clear the entrance examination conducted by the institution.

Admission Requirement

Individuals interested in studying a BDS course must clear the entrance examination with the threshold score. Most of the institutions require a minimum of 50% in the entrance examination.

Here are a few important details useful for the applicants:

  • The questions asked in the entrance examination are multiple-choice questions in the dentistry field.
  • There is a negative marking system. It means that a certain percentage of marks the question carries will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • The marks obtained in the entrance examination are considered while determining the merit list for the scholarship.

If you are accepted to study the BDS course, you might need to submit the following certificates/documents to the institutions for admission.

  •  Marksheet, certificate, and the character certificate of S.E.E/S.L.C
  • Transcript of 10+2 or any equivalent course
  • Migration certificate of 10+2 or any equivalent course
  • Mark sheet of intermediate level or any equivalent course
  • Copy of citizenship or passport

Fee Structure

Medicine is one of the most expensive fields to study. It can cost a good amount of fortune to finish a degree in this sector.

The good news is that a BDS degree is relatively less expensive despite being in the field of medicine.

The fee structure for BDS courses in Nepal varies depending on the colleges one chooses. The government-funded colleges have lower fees in comparison to private colleges.

It might cost around 20 lakhs to 50 lakhs to study BDS in Nepal.

The total number of seats available to study BDS courses in Nepal is 565. 110 of the total seats are available for scholarships.

55% of the scholarship is provided through open competition while the remaining 45% is provided through quota or reservation.
