BE Geomatics Course, Bachelor of Geomatics Engineering

Bachelor of Geomatics Engineering

Before constructing any structures, the land area and the geography have to be surveyed to get the geospatial data. These data are used to construct the topographic and base maps which helps architects and civil engineers to plan the layout for the structure.

It is a Bachelor’s in Geomatics engineering that provides the knowledge regarding techniques used to collect geospatial data.

overview

A Bachelor of Geomatics Engineering Degree or BE Geomatics Course is a field that encompasses different aspects of science and engineering principles for mapping, surveying, geospatial data analysis, and geographic information systems (GIS).

The geomatics engineer combines different facets of multiple fields like civil engineering, geography, geospatial science, and even computer science to manage and analyze the spatial data required in the planning for construction.

The history of industrialization and urbanization in Nepal is not very old. In recent years the government has been constructing the infrastructures needed for the country. Private industries are also being established.

It is surveyors that are required in the initial phase to gather the geographic data of the land selected for the construction of structures. These data help to create the site map which is used to design these infrastructures.

The demand for this type of manpower gave birth to official surveying education, which began in 1968 at the survey training centre. The School of Geomatics (SOG), later founded, started providing a Diploma in Survey Engineering in 2001.

The Himalayan College of Geomatic Engineering and Land Resource Management (GIT), which is associated with Purbanchal University in Nepal, was founded in 2004. It began offering the Bachelor of Geomatic Engineering degree in 2005.

Currently, three universities in Nepal through their affiliated colleges provide the BE Geomatics course. They are:

  • Tribhuvan University (TU)
  • Kathmandu University (KU)
  • Purbanchal University (PU)

General Information

The Bachelor in Geomatics Engineering degree is a 4-year undergraduate program with a total of 8 semesters. The number of colleges providing the course is very low when compared to other engineering programs. The total number of seats available across all the universities is also less.

However, multiple institutions in Nepal provide a Diploma in Geomatics Engineering. The objective of this course is similar to that of an engineering degree. Nepal produces thousands of geomatics professionals from these colleges as well.

The comparison of the number of colleges and seats in the university is shown in the table below.

Besides these, the curriculum also focuses on topics like physics, chemistry, mathematics, and basic principles of engineering. Students get hands-on experience through project work, field visits, lab work, and even internships in some cases.

Why should you study geomatics engineering?

There are following reason you can study Geomatics engineering:

  • The study has predicted the rise in the demand of geomatics engineers due to the growth of geomatics industry all around the world.
  • Government authority such as water resources management, land development, military and police hires geomatics engineering graduates.
  • After graduating geomatics engineering, you get to travel various parts of this world on expense of company or your client.

Objectives of BE Geomatics course

The objectives of the BE Geomatics course are:

  • To impart students with a solid base in the field of geospatial science along with engineering principles.
  • To teach freshers about the techniques to measure and map the land structures accurately.
  • To train them in geospatial data analysis and interpretation.
  • To provide pupils with knowledge regarding Graphical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing.
  • To help undergraduates develop project management skills required in their careers.
  • To help students contribute to environmental conservation and development.

What is the salary of Geomatics Engineers in Nepal?

In Nepal, the demand of geomatics engineers has highly increased. The average salary of the geomatics engineers ranges between Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 1,50,000 per month based on their skills and experience.

How much salary Geomatics engineers can earn?

The earning of geomatics engineers can differ based on countries and skill of geomatic engineers. Some countries with highest salary for geomatics engineers are as follow:

Country Approximate Salary Range Per Year

eligibility of BE Geomatics

Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible to study the BE chemical course:

  • Should have completed Intermediate level in science stream or equivalent level by taking physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • Should clear the entrance examination conducted by the university and secure the name on the merit list.

The below table showcases the academic requirements for the university.

TU & PU

KU

  • must have obtained an aggregate score of at least 50% (in percentile), a C+ (for the letter grading system), or 2.4 (for the CGPA).
  • Should have a minimum of a 50% aggregate in physics, chemistry, and biology.
  •  Must have received a grade C (in the case of a letter grading system) or an overall average of 45% in the science stream (physics, chemistry, and math) in 10+2 or at an equivalent level.

Admission Requirement

Individuals interested in pursuing a geomatics engineering degree should take the admission test provided by their chosen university. After clearing it, and securing the name in the merit list, they can proceed for admission.

Here are some key points that the entrance exam appearing individuals can find useful.

  • The type of questions asked is objective.
  • There might be a negative ranking system in the examination. It means that a certain percentage of the mark the question carries will be deducted if the answer provided is wrong.
  • To be enlisted in the merit list, securing just the past marks might not be enough.
  • While preparing the merit list, the marks secured in the entrance examination are considered.

You might need to submit the following documents for the admission procedure.

  • Marksheet, character certificate, and certificate of S.E.E or S.L.C.
  • Mark sheet, Transcript, migration, and character certificate of 10+2 or equivalent level.
  • Copy of citizenship or passport
