BE Chemical Course, Bachelor of Chemical Engineering

Bachelor of Chemical Engineering

The urbanization and industrialization across the whole world gave birth to the field of engineering responsible for dealing with the operation and design of manufacturing facilities. This branch also dealt with techniques for improving production.

The field of engineering mentioned in the above paragraph is chemical engineering. It applies the concepts of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and economics to effectively use, create, design, transport, and transform energy and materials

Overview

The Bachelor of Chemical Engineering course is an undergraduate program providing education on related topics and fields. It is accountable for providing education for designing plants and their operation.

The course also focuses on safety and hazard assessments, process design, and analysis required for manufacturing plants and factories.

It is the responsibility of a chemical engineer to ensure that people are safe to use them when new goods are created by the combination of various elements and materials in today's world.

Chemical Engineering Course in Nepal

The manufacturing output of Nepal has significantly increased in recent years as the nation saw industrial growth. These companies require skilled and experienced manpower to produce high quality product which is safe to use.

The need for process engineers was fulfilled by foreigners. To ensure that the youth who want to pursue their career in the related field finds opportunity in Nepal, the BE chemical course was first introduced by Kathmandu University (KU) in 2015 AD.

Tribhuvan University (TU) also introduced a Chemical engineering course in 2019 AD. Currently, these 2 are the only universities providing the program.

General Information

Chemical Engineering course in Nepal is a relatively newer program. Due to this, the institutions providing it are less. Teaching it in the earlier days was a challenge considering the limited resources and the lack of labs.

But with industrial growth, the situation is changing and hopefully, more institutions will start providing the BE chemical course.

Currently, only two institutions teach it, Pulchowk Engineering Campus and Kathmandu University School of Engineering affiliated with TU and KU respectively.

Talking about the program, a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering is an undergraduate degree. The total duration of the course is 4 years. There are a total of 8 semesters in it. The estimated credit hour is 140 to 150.

Course Structure:

The BE chemical course structure is designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge about the principles and practices of the subject. The students are exposed to various subjects like advanced chemistry, physics, mathematics, and material science, and many more.

A few of the topics that the Bachelor of Chemical Engineering course structure covers are:

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Transport Phenomena
  • Different topics of Chemistry
  • Material Science and Metallurgy
  • Nano and composite Materials
  • Plant Design

The graduates are well-equipped with enough education to start their career as a chemical engineer. The topics cover the base knowledge required for the post-graduation in the related subject.

They also get experience required in the related sectors through lab and project work, field visits, and internships in some cases.

Objective of BE Chemical

The Chemical engineering course's main aim is to provide the nation with capable individuals who understand the possibilities of the available resources and use them to maximize the desired products.

However, there are some other objectives of the BE chemical course and they are:-

  • To embed student with in-depth knowledge of chemicals, their properties, and their useful application to the real field.
  • To ensure students' strong design, analysis, and optimization skills in the manufacturing process.
  • To ascertain the capability of conducting laboratory experiments on students.
  • To build a strong foundation of fundamentals of chemical engineering so that they will be able pursue higher education in chemical engineering or related fields.
  • To help in the analysis of the economic condition and the resources available.
  • To prepare undergraduates to develop safe, sustainable, and cost-effective engineering systems for large-scale industrial processing and operations.

Eligibilty of BE Chemical

Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible to study the BE chemical course:

  • Should have completed Intermediate level in science stream or equivalent level by taking physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • Should clear the entrance examination conducted by the university and secure the name in the merit list.

The other criteria differ depending upon the university, Let us look into it:

KU

TU

  • Should have secured an aggregate of at least 50% (in percentile)or C+ grade (FOR letter grading system) or 2.4 in case of CGPA.
  • Should have obtained a minimum of a 50% aggregate in physics, chemistry, and biology.
  • Should have an aggregate of 45% or grade C (in case of letter grading system) in 10+2 in science stream (physics, chemistry & mathematics) or any equivalent level.

Scope of BE Chemical

Any sector that has to deal with the processes and systems has a huge possibility of accepting the fresh graduates. Cement factories, pharmaceutical industries, food companies, and health care are some of the areas where students can pursue their careers.

A few of the career choices for the BE chemical graduates are listed below:-

  • Cement Factories: Nepal is home to many cement factories. They require engineers to ensure high quality final products. The pass outs can apply for jobs in this industry.
  • Plant Manager: Any manufacturing plant requires someone who is experienced and knowledgeable in the field. They will be responsible for overseeing the entire production of the products and managing it.
  • BE chemical course graduates can work as plant managers.
  • Pharmaceutical Industries:The compounds mixed in the medicines have to be accurate, precise, efficient, and safe during the manufacturing process. This is the job perfect for the BE chemical course holders.
  • Materials Engineers: Many of the materials used in the modern day are harmful to the environment. The substances used in those materials are deteriorating nature and its ecosystem.
  • Chemical engineering course graduates can contribute to the production of eco-friendly materials.
  • Mineral Water Plant:Clean drinking water is the basic requirement of every human being. In the context of cities of Nepal, drinking water is available in jars and bottles. These waters are made safe to drink through different experiments and different treatments. The BE chemical scholar can work in these plants.

While these are some of the scopes for the BE chemical course, there are some other careers worth pursuing. They can work for the government in different plant facilities.

Different private industries also hire BE chemical course pass outs. The freshers can also work in the research field contributing to the field of engineering through their knowledge.

They can also pursue their higher education to earn a master’s degree. Teaching in the colleges is also an option available.

There are millions of manufacturing plants and companies across the world hiring engineers of related fields. So, pursuing a career abroad might be the perfect choice for many.

Admission Requirement of BE Chemical

Those individuals who are interested in pursuing a chemical engineering course should attend the admission test examination administered by the respective university.  The forms are available online on the university's official website.

Below listed are a few points that applicants might find useful:-

Fee Structure

The fee structure of the Chemical Engineering course is relatively expensive as compared to others.

The price for the undergraduate degree at Tribhuvan University is about NPR 6,00,000 to 6,50,000 while at KU it is about NPR 8,00,000 to 9,00,000.

Scholarships

Both Pulchowk Engineering Campus and Kathmandu University School of Engineering provide scholarships to the students willing to study the BE Chemical course.

Out of 48 seats available in Pulchowk Campus, 36 are full fee and the remaining are regular.

Kathmandu University also provides scholarships for the program as per the government rules.

  • The type of questions asked is objective.
  • Depending upon the university policy, there might be a negative ranking system.
  • The marks obtained in the entrance exam are considered while preparing a merit list.
  • Due to limited available seats and high competition for BE in chemical, securing just pass marks doesn't ensure your name in the merit list.

After you secure your name on the merit list, you might need to submit the following document for the admission procedure.

  • Marksheet, character certificate, and certificate of S.E.E or S.L.C.
  • Mark sheet, Transcript, migration, and character certificate of 10+2 or equivalent level.
  • Copy of citizenship or passport
