Bachelor of Civil Engineering

Bachelor of Civil Engineering

4 billion of the world's population live in cities in this modern era. More than 2/3 of the world will live in urban areas as suggested by the reports by 2050 AD. In the midst of rapid urban expansion, there is a need and demand for visionaries, innovators, and experts in building cities- civil engineers.

Bachelor of Civil Engineering or BE Civil is a course designed to produce such individuals who are capable of creating, maintaining, and constructing the physical and naturally built environment.

Overview of Bachelor of Civil Engineering

Bachelor of Civil Engineering is an undergraduate program equipping graduates with comprehensive knowledge and skills for infrastructure development. The students are exposed to various civil engineering-related principles and practices in this course.

The BE civil course not only focuses on the theoretical aspects but also allows its students to be exposed to the practical side. The lab works and field research involved in this undergraduate degree; helps students to become capable civil engineer.

Let us look at some key points that the BE Civil course offers;

  • Study of different disciplines of civil engineering.
  • Emphasis on problem-solving abilities and project management through practical and fieldwork.
  • Skills and knowledge to design and construct the infrastructure.
  • Individuals who contribute to the development of society and country.
  • A broad range of scope, both locally and globally.

BE Civil Course in Nepal

The BE course was first introduced in Nepal in 1998 A.D. by Pulchowk Campus, Tribhuvan University. As of the present date, other 6 universities provide it along with TU. The undergraduate degree was introduced to meet the infrastructural demand of the country.

Infrastructure development plays an important role in Nepal for the whole nation to prosper. From structures like houses or buildings to hydrological stations, a civil engineer is required to plan, design, and build it. Sensing the scope and demand, the BE Civil course was introduced in Nepal.

General Information

BE civil course is a 4-year, 8-semester undergraduate program. There are a total of 7 universities actively teaching it across their affiliated colleges. It is taught in more than 40 colleges across Nepal.

The total number of seats available all over Nepal is 3497. This proves that this course is a competitive one. Thousands of students appear in the entrance examination to study BE civil and only 3497 students are selected to study it.

The table below shows a comparative study of the duration, number of colleges, seats available, and credit hours across different universities in Nepal.

Objectives of Bachelor of Civil Engineering

The Civil engineering course has multiple objectives, all of which focus on improving and sustaining the built environment in order to meet the infrastructural demands of society. Let's look at the in-depth purpose of the course:

  • The BE Civil course provides individuals with a society capable enough to design and construct the required infrastructure like bridges, roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, and many more.
  • The engineers need to ensure the safety of the infrastructure and the public property. These structures should be able to withstand various calamities. This course supplies students with the required knowledge for this.
  • The course ensures that civil engineers are capable of making decisions for the welfare of society and nature.
  • It teaches students about the optimization of resources.
  • It includes various sub-disciplines. Students can study them for their master’s.

Career and Scope of Bachelor of Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is one of the oldest disciplines under an engineering degree. From constructing cloud-touching buildings to the simple houses we live in, the scope of civil engineering is vast and wide.

A few of the scopes of the BE Civil Course are discussed below;

  • Construction Company: After getting their engineering license, engineers can work for the construction companies. As civil engineers, they will be responsible for developing and planning the infrastructure
  • Work for the government: The government is always planning and constructing various structures required for the development of the country. The graduates can work as an engineer for the government and help in the enhancement of the growth of the nation.
  • Structural Engineer: Civil engineers can get their master’s degree in structural engineering. It will help enhance their knowledge of the design and analysis of structures and work as structural engineers.
  • Consulting: With their vast knowledge about different topics and areas, the graduates of BE civil course work as consultants providing expert insight to different institutions.
  • Research: The degree holder can work as a researcher for research institutions to advance the techniques and technologies involved in infrastructure development.
  • Transportation Engineering: It deals with road construction, highways, canals, railways, highways, and other structures used for transportation. Civil engineers can work as such engineers.
  • Site Development and Planning: A civil engineer can work on-site development and plan the site. They will play a vital role in infrastructure by evaluating, designing, and preparing for infrastructure development.
  • Entrepreneurship: The graduates can be entrepreneurs and open their own construction companies. They can even manage various big or small construction projects for other companies.
