Overview of Bachelor of Engineering in Computer

A computer engineering course is an advanced degree that brings two branches of science together to provide knowledge of both the hardware and the software aspects of the computer. 

This course provides its pupil with expertise in building the software that runs the machine like the operating system, embedded firmware etc. It also involves teaching of building the physical components like memory systems, and microprocessors.

Computer Engineering Course in Nepal

In 1994, Kathmandu University introduced the first computer science and engineering program in Nepal. And, in the academic year 1998/99 Tribhuvan University offered its first computer engineering bachelor's degree.

The computing and technological industry was evolving and Nepal recognised the need to catch up with it. As a result, this course was introduced. 

Currently, there are 6 universities providing computer engineering courses through its affiliated colleges. They are: 

  • Tribhuvan University (TU) 
  • Kathmandu University (KU) 
  • Purbanchal University (PU) 
  • Pokhara University (PoU) 
  • Mid-Western University (MU) 
  • Far-Western University (SPU)

General Information

Bachelor of Computer Engineering course is a 4-year undergraduate degree with a total of 8 semesters.  There are more than 30 colleges in Nepal that provide this degree.

Eligibility Criteria of Bachelor of Engineering in Computer

Different universities might have different eligibility criteria to study the bachelor in computer engineering course. The general criteria that any student should is listed below: 

  • The applicant should have passed twelve years of schooling. 
  • The applicant should have passed the entrance examination with the threshold score.
  • The applicant should have passed the 10+2 in science stream or any equivalent course with at least 45% or with a grade “C”.

Note that this is the general eligibility criteria that applicants must meet. However, different universities might have different criteria. Candidates are advised to visit the preferred university or colleges to know if they are eligible to study the mechanical engineering course or not.

Admission Requirement

Those who are interested in studying bachelor in computer engineering must pass the entrance examination conducted by the university. They should do so with the threshold score, as the competition is high. 

Applicants can prepare for the entrance examination by themselves or get admitted to the institutions providing entrance preparation classes. 

Here are a few key points students might find helpful regarding the entrance examination: 

  • The type of questions asked in the entrance exam are objective. 
  • Depending upon the university policies, there might be a negative marking system. It means a certain percentage of the mark might be deducted for every wrong answer. 
  • Just securing the pass mark is not enough as the competition is very high. So students are encouraged to aim for higher marks. 

After being eligible to be admitted to study computer engineering course, they might need the following documents: 

  • Certificate of S.E.E / S.L.C. and its mark sheet. 
  • Transcript of 10+2 or any equivalent course
  • Migration certificate of 10+2 or any equivalent course
  • Mark sheet of intermediate level or of any equivalent course

Fee Structure

The price of studying computer engineering courses in government-funded colleges is cheaper than in private colleges.  The fee structure depends upon different factors from affiliation to the facilities provided by the colleges.

Scholarships

Nearly all the universities providing computer engineering offer scholarships. However, students must meet certain criterias to claim it.

Depending upon the university there is a provision for full and partial scholarships. After receiving full scholarships students are not obliged to pay any tuition fees. However, those receiving the partial scholarships should pay a certain amount as the tuition fee. 

Private colleges might or might not provide scholarships. It depends upon their policies.
