BPerf Course, Bachelor of Perfusion Technology

Bachelor of Perfusion Technology

Perfusion technology is a study of the role and area played by Perfusionists who work in replacing the heart and lungs for a certain time amidst major surgeries. Normally, during the surgery heart and lungs have to be stopped temporarily and require replacement to function instead of these organs and this is conducted by specialized professionals who use technology to replace these functions.

Overview

Bachelor of Perfusion Technology course is a bachelor's level education that teaches students about overall anatomy, biology, and related technology needed to assist and/or replace the heart's and/or lung functions during major surgical operations.

Major surgeries that concern the heart and lungs are risky and very sensible. So, the surgical team needs perfusionists in it. They use heart-lung machines during these operations to save the patient's life.

BPerf Course in Nepal

The BPerf Course in Nepal is a relatively new degree that was initiated in 2075/76 by Tribhuvan University. In Nepal, students of Medicine can study this academic program for now from Maharajgunj Medical Campus which is a TU-affiliated college, and also at, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) another institute to provide the BPerf course in Nepal.

With medical advancement and the introduction of modern technologies, the situation of cardiovascular surgeries has been improving. Perfusionists work together with other medical experts to conduct an operation on their patients. BPerf course is extremely important for the future of medical science in Nepal. Perfusion pressure helps the blood to keep flowing when a major surgery on a patient is conducted.

General Information

Bachelor of Perfusion Technology or BPerf course is a four-year undergraduate program. The entrance exam to study this program is conducted from the Medical Education Common Entrance Exam for the Bachelor level. The total number of seats available for this program is only 5. Its distribution is shown in the table below in the scholarship section.

BPerf course combines both the knowledge of medical science and skills required to operate the technologies for perfusion. The program provides education regarding the physiology of the lungs and hearts.

Course Structure

Talking about the BPerf course structure is designed mainly to train students to use heart-lung machines during surgeries. The theory part also revolves around the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Here are some of the areas that the BPerf syllabus covers:

  • Pathology and Physiology
  • Applied and advanced perfusion technology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Human Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Pharmacology

After completing the BPerf course students can perform perfusion in patients under the surgical team. They will have the skills and knowledge to pursue their career in the related field.

Objective of BPerf

The primary objective of the BPerf course is to produce competent perfusionists to serve the medical field. However, there are other purposes as well. They are listed below:-

  • To gain knowledge for a skilled and well-qualified perfusionist capable of managing heart-lung machines for patients of major transplant procedures.
  • To teach how to use machines during surgery.
  • To impart problem-solving and communication skills to students so they can work in a surgical team with ease.
  • Teaches how to take care of machines used during surgeries like heart-lung machines.

Eligibility for BPerf

To be eligible to study the BPerf course an applicant must meet the following criteria:-

  • Should have received an intermediate or equivalent level of education in the science stream. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are compulsory.
  • The aggregate marks should be 50% or 2.4 CGPA or C+ grade.
  • The marks in the entrance examination should be more or equal to 50% of the total marks
