Bachelor of Perfusion Technology

Bachelor of Perfusion Technology

The heart and lungs work together to oxygenate the blood and maintain the blood flow throughout the body. Without any one of this might be life-threatening.

During major cardiovascular surgeries or in those where the heart and lungs have to be stopped temporarily require a replacement to function instead of these organs. This is where a perfusionist and perfusion technology comes in.

In straightforward language, perfusion technology is a machine that replaces the heart and lungs for a certain time amidst major surgeries. Perfusionists are those professionals who are experts in this field. And, a bachelor in perfusion technology (BPerf) is an education aimed to produce these experts.

Overview of Bachelor of Perfusion Technology

BPerf course is a bachelor's level education that teaches students about overall anatomy, biology, and related technology needed to assist and/or replace the heart's and/or lung functions during major surgical operations.

Major surgeries that concern the heart and lungs are risky and very sensible. So, the surgical team needs perfusionists in it. They use heart-lung machines during these operations to save the patient's life.

BPerf Course in Nepal

The BPerf Course in Nepal is a relatively new degree. It was started in the academic year 2075/76 by Tribhuvan University. Maharajgunj Medical Campus is the only TU-affiliated college to provide the program.

Besides this, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) is another institute to provide the BPerf course in Nepal.

With medical advancement and the introduction of modern technologies, the situation of cardiovascular surgeries has been improving. Perfusionists work together with other medical experts to conduct an operation. So, the BPerf course is extremely important for the future of medical science in Nepal.

General Information

Bachelor of Perfusion Technology or BPerf course is an undergraduate degree with a total duration of 4 years. The total number of seats available for this program is only 5. Its distribution is shown in the table below in the scholarship section.

BPerf course combines both the knowledge of medical science and skills required to operate the technologies for perfusion. The program provides education regarding the physiology of the lungs and hearts.

Course Structure

Talking about the BPerf course structure, it is designed mainly to train students to use heart-lung machines during surgeries. The theory part also revolves around the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Here are some of the areas that the BPerf syllabus covers:

  • Pathology and Physiology
  • Applied and advanced perfusion technology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Human Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Pharmacology

After completing the BPerf course students can perform perfusion in patients under the surgical team. They will have the skills and knowledge to pursue their career in the related field.

Objectives of Bachelor of Perfusion Technology

The primary objective of the BPerf course is to produce competent perfusionists to serve the medical field. However, there are other purposes as well. They are listed below:

  • To assist students in becoming skilled perfusion technologists capable of managing heart-lung machines for patients undergoing major heart, lung, and transplant procedures.
  • To provide individuals with an in-depth knowledge of the functions of the heart, and lungs, and what happens when any of them aren't operating at full capacity.
  • To teach how to use machines during the surgery
  • To impart problem-solving and communication skills to students so they can work in a surgical team with ease.

Career and Scope of Bachelor of Perfusion Technology

The BPerf course was designed to produce perfusion technologists of different kinds. This is the major scope for the graduates who study in this program. The different kinds of perfusionists are;

  • Pediatric
  • Cardiac
  • Transplant
  • Clinical perfusion specialists

Beside this, the BPerf scholars can work as educators, trainers, and researchers in different fields.

Eligibility Criteria of Bachelor of Perfusion Technology

To be eligible to study the BPerf course an applicant must meet the following criteria

  • Should have received an intermediate or equivalent level of education in the science stream. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are compulsory.
  • The aggregate marks should be 50% or 2.4 CGPA or C+ grade.
  • The marks in the entrance examination should be more or equal to 50% of the total marks

Anyone interested in studying BPerf courses in Nepal should first appear in the admission test conducted by the respective institutions. They should fill the form with the correct information and submit it.

Here are a few of the points regarding the BPerf entrance examination that an applicant might find useful;

  • Question type- Objective
  • Applicants must secure at least 50% of total marks in the entrance examination to pass the test.
  • The admission test score is considered while preparing the merit list for the scholarship.

The college administration might require students to submit the following document as part of the admission procedure.

  • Marksheet, character, and proof certificate of SEE/ SLC
  • Transcript, mark sheet and migration, and character certificate of 10+2 or any equivalent course
  • Copy of citizenship
  • Admit card for the entrance exam

Fee Structure

The fee structure for the BPerf course in Nepal is around NPR 6,00,000 to NPR 8,00,000.

Please note that this is the estimated range. Students are advised to contact the concerned administration of the preferred institution to know about the actual BPerf fee structure.

Scholarships

The BPerf course is relatively new and challenging in Nepal. So, the total number of seats allocated for it is low.

There are a total of 5 seats for the BPerf course in Nepal. Among these 3 are separated for scholarship which is further divided into two groups; 55% of it is allocated for the general category while the remaining 45% is for the quota.

The following table lists the institution's names as well as the number of scholarship seats allotted to them for the Bachelor of Perfusion Technology, or BPerf course in Nepal. (As of 2023)
