MEd Math | KU

The MEd Math program is a two-year, four-semester course offered by Kathmandu University. Launched in 2006, this degree aims to produce skilled teachers, trainers, tutors, and researchers in the field of mathematics. The MEd math degree consists of 60 credit hours. The course is structured into core, concentration, elective, and practical courses.

The core courses carry a weightage of 6 credit hours. The concentration courses amount to 39 credit hours and are further divided into foundation courses and professional courses. The foundation courses comprise 24 credit hours, while the professional courses account for 15 credit hours.

In MEd Math studies, students also have the option to select elective subjects. The available elective courses for freshers include Probability and Operations Research, Multi-variable Calculus, Functional Analysis, Fractal Geometry, Recent Paradigms of Mathematics Learning, Historical Development of Mathematical Ideas, and Ethno mathematics. Additionally, there is a practical course worth 9 credit hours, which includes a compulsory internship project and a thesis work/research project.

Objectives of MEd Math

The main objectives of the MEd Math program at KU for students are as follows:

  • To cultivate outstanding educators who can contribute to the advancement of Mathematics education and, in turn, facilitate social transformation.
  • To nurture strong understanding of the subject matter and pedagogy, enabling them to integrate both effectively in teaching and learning activities.
  • To equip the latest principles, methodologies, teaching resources, appropriate curricula, textbooks, and materials to enhance their effectiveness in teaching Mathematics.
  • To support conducting research on mathematics education and related social issues, thereby enhancing their own research knowledge and skills.

Admission Requirements in MEd Math

Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible candidates for the MEd Mathematics course include those with a BEd in Mathematics, PGDE in Mathematics, BA in Mathematics, BSc in Physical and Mathematical Sciences, or any equivalent degree*, with a minimum aggregate score of 50% or 2.5/4.

Students who hold a BA or BSc degree will be required to complete two additional 3-credit mathematics education level, as specified by the School of Education.

Internationally, graduates from the following areas are also eligible to pursue studies in mathematics education:

  • Computer Science
  • Computing with a mathematics minor
  • Computer and Electronics Engineering

Entrance Exam:

All prospective applicants must participate in an entrance exam and pass the exam.

Selection Process:

The selection of candidates will be based on the merit list generated after the entrance exam.
