The world is full of dispute and aspirations of the peace which is omnipresent attribute of human history in the forms and nature of conflicts continue to expand from the traditional appease over religion, identity, ideology and resources such as land, water and oil into its difficult structure of narcoterrorism, human trafficking, trans-border crime syndicates and political terrorism.

The TU-Department of Conflict, Peace and Development Studies delivers an accurate courses of lectures, seminars, research, fieldwork and internship. The M.A (Master of Arts) program runs for two years with four semesters.

The student from the CDPS department has been trying as an observer during the historical Constituent Assembly event held in April of 2008.When the second semester was running smoothly, a CDPS student successfully took part in short-term peace training workshop which was held in Austria.

Why TU Department of Conflict ?

In the real world of dispute and aspirations the peace is omnipresent hallmark of human history, the forms and nature of quarrel continue to expand from the traditional appease over religion, identity, ideology and resources like land, water, minerals and oil into more complex structure of narcoterrorism, human trafficking, trans-border crime syndicates as well as political terrorism.

As a result, the sites of conflicts can also be discovered from domestic, organizational, local to the national and global. The various attributes and levels of conflicts are inter-related to produce particular illustration in specific locals. The difficulty of dispute occurrences with varied perspectives and analytic frames are progressing in mediation, debate and peace practices to deal with the central provocation at present.

By realizing and understanding about the traditional single disciplinary focus is not enough for perceiving the complexities of the present disagreement at the beginning of the third millennium. The Tribhuvan University (TU) designed the Conflict, Peace and Development Studies (CPDS) as a multidisciplinary Master’s program which points on the key vision and strengths from several disciplines in social sciences and humanities along with the environmental sciences to deliver diverse perceiving of the multi-faceted event.

TheTU-Department of Conflict, Peace and Development Studies provides an accurate courses of lectures, seminars, research, fieldwork and internship. The M.A (Master of Arts) program runs for two years with four semesters. The M. A (Master of Arts) program aims to separate the theoretical, methodological and practical set of wisdom and skills which will equip the department of CPDS (Conflict, peace and development studies). The CPDS graduates can operate the variety of roles including academic teaching and research, policy analysis as well as hands- on practitioner’s in conflict mediation, negotiation as well as peace building at local in national and international level. The university is a new center that has devoted to the teaching and research. The CPDS is anticipated to evolve as a professional conference for academics and interpreter working in the area of conflict, peace and security.

MA in Conflict, Peace and Development Studies

The college provides the course Conflict, Peace and Development Studies as the main course from the Tribhuvan University (TU) department.

Theory –practice interface:

The CPDS (Conflict, Peace and Development Studies) is the key revolution due to its comparative approach. There are various cases from a wide range of conflicts and peace processes in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe which are examined to obtain both the universal as well as the historically particular lessons in the inter related dynamics of disputes, peace and development.

The CPDS further shades the light on its qualified approach and international comprehension sharing through a regular exchange of students and faculty between its collaborated institutions. The partner institutions are University of Life Sciences (UMB) in Aas, Norway, University of Ruhuna in Matara in Sri Lanka and COMSATS Institute of Information Technology in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education(SIU) supports between the four partner universities. The CDPS has a regular exchange of students and faculty between its partner institutions. The CDPS began its classes with the first batch of 38 students in September 2007.From the establishment of the college, the program has successfully completed its first semester where the second semester comes to a close in June 2008.The college has also held different workshop and workout sessions by combining the academics, teachers and students.

The students studying in the CDPS department has interned as an observer during the historical Constituent Assembly held in 2008 of April. When the second semester was ongoing, a CDPS student successfully took part in short-term peace training workshop which was held in Austria.

In May 2008, the CDPS course successfully ran its field research in laboratories in Beldangi of Jhapa district as well as Shaktikhor of Chitwan district and near the border villages of Kapilbastu. The three field were assigned to the students for track their individual research projects on variety features of Bhutanese refugee camp life, fortress and regain the Maoist PLA troops as well as the causes and impact of communal violence by employing different field research method and techniques.
